Home Hair Care Tips to Keep Your Locks Looking Beautiful
There is nothing better than freshly cut and styled hair. It feels soft, looks perfect - and honestly, you just feel amazing! If you’re looking for a way to keep that looks-great-feels-great hair between appointments, we’ve got you covered!
Here are some of our favourite tips to keep your hair looking fabulous at home in between your trips to our downtown Kelowna hair salon and style bar.
Shampoo and Conditioner Matter
There's no getting around the fact that salon shampoo and conditioner are more expensive, but there’s a good reason for it and your hair will thank you for the investment. Salon products are more concentrated, meaning they are also less processed and watered down. This means you can use less and make the bottle last longer. But salon products also use higher-quality ingredients, so you’ll see a more noticeable improvement in your hair, faster.
Use a Mask
Hair masks are especially beneficial for dry and damaged hair. A hair mask is a ramped-up way to condition your hair after you shampoo. There are plenty of commercially available masks, or you can make one yourself at home (do a google search, or ask us for our faves!). Once a week is enough for most hair types to give your hair a burst of nourishment and moisture, keeping it healthy between salon visits.
Use a Silk Pillowcase
What does your pillowcase have to do with hair health? Turns out the type of fabric you sleep on can affect frizz and the overall health of your hair. Silk feels luxurious, and your hair loves it. Silk helps your hair retain moisture, which is a big plus after you have invested in salon conditioner and used a hair mask once a week. Your hair is also far less likely to snag and pull on silk, which means less damage. And of course, less damage means less frizz in the morning! It’s a win-win cycle.
Use Wide Tooth Comb or Detangling Brush on Wet Hair
Any old brush just isn't good enough, especially when your hair is wet. Did you know that your hair stretches 70% more when it is wet?! This stretching can cause damage to each strand of hair, which causes frizz and dryness, and can even cause breakage. A wide-tooth comb or brush specifically for detangling is the best choice when your hair is wet.
Use a Scrunchie Not an Elastic
Elastics are not your friend! Elastics pull and bend the hair, causing damage as it holds your hair up as you go about your day. A scrunchie is a much better option. It is softer on your hair and doesn’t pull it as tightly, meaning it’s less likely to stretch and damage your strands throughout the day. Especially if you’re wearing your hair up more days than not, opt for soft scrunchies over elastics.
Braid Extensions Before Bed
If you have hair extensions, take special care before heading to bed. Extensions should be braided to keep the hair in place, minimize damage, and prevent knots and tangles. It’s also key to preventing matting at the root, which can lead to damage during removal. As a bonus, by taking a few minutes to braid your hair before bed, you can wake up with loose waves ready to go!
Trim Regularly
Even if your hair isn't getting too long, or you feel it still looks good, it is smart to schedule a trip to the salon every six to eight weeks. At Nude Salon & Style Bar, we understand that you are busy and make it simple for you to make an appointment to pop in for a trim. We will evaluate the health of your hair, offer personalized advice on care between your visits with us, and of course, give your hair that trim to keep it looking healthy, fresh, and promote growth.
