Common Hair Myths, Debunked

We’ve all heard them - and maybe we swear by some! But these myths are nothing more than old wives tales, and we’re here to set the record straight, so you can have beautiful, luscious locks!

Trimming Hair Makes It Grow Faster: While regular trims can help keep hair healthy and prevent split ends, cutting hair doesn't actually affect its growth rate. Hair grows from the roots, and trimming the ends doesn't stimulate the scalp to produce hair faster.

You should shampoo every day: Washing your hair daily can strip away its natural oils, leading to dryness and potential damage. The frequency of shampooing should depend on your hair type and personal preference. Many people can go a few days between washes without any issues. A good dry shampoo can help you go even longer!

More Lather, Better Clean: The belief that more lather from shampoo equals cleaner hair is false. Lather is a result of sulfates in shampoo, and excessive lathering can strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness.

Brushing 100 Strokes a Day Makes Hair Healthier: Overbrushing can actually cause hair breakage and damage. While brushing can help distribute natural oils, doing it excessively can lead to more harm than good.

Cold Water Makes Hair Shinier: While rinsing hair with cold water can help close the hair cuticle, improving shine, the effect is temporary. Warm water is just as effective at cleaning the hair.

If You’re Blonde, Leave Purple Shampoo on as long as Possible: While it’s absolutely true that purple shampoo can help your hair look brighter, fresher, and less brassy, leaving it on for too long can cause buildup on the hair, causing it to look darker.

Tightly Pulling Hair Back Prevents Hair Loss: Constantly wearing hairstyles that pull hair tightly, like tight ponytails or braids, can actually lead to a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. It's important to avoid excessive tension on the hair and scalp.

You Can "Repair" Split Ends: Once a hair strand is split, there's no way to truly repair it. Products may temporarily mask the appearance of split ends, but the only effective solution is trimming.

Natural Oils Are Bad for Your Hair: Natural oils like coconut oil or argan oil can be beneficial for hair when used in moderation. They can help with hydration and protection, but it's important not to overdo it, as too much oil can weigh down the hair. Your best bet is to invest in quality products, which incorporate the exact amount of natural oils you should be using based on scientific research.

Heat Protectants Make Hair Invincible to Heat Damage: While heat protectants can help reduce heat damage, they don't make your hair completely immune to it. It's still best to use heat styling tools sparingly and at lower temperatures.

Brushing Wet Hair Prevents Breakage: Wet hair is more susceptible to breakage, and brushing it immediately after washing can lead to damage. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb or detangling brush to gently work through knots.

You Should Grow Your Hair Out for Wedding Styling: Many brides believe that the longer their hair is on their wedding day, the better and the more options they have for styling. But the opposite might be true - especially if you want an up-do. Stylists have less places to hide hair with up-dos, and if your hair is extra long, it could make it tricky to get the look you’ve been dreaming of.
