Those Bold Y2K Hairstyles are Back, Baby!

The 90s and early 2000s were a fun time for anyone looking for a unique hairstyle to showcase their personality! Less about perfectly coifed locks and more about showcasing personality, Y2K hairstyles were defined by bold experimentation - chunky highlights, butterfly clips, and signature hairstyles like ‘The Rachel’.

And we’re THRILLED that some of these trends are making a comeback! Here are some of our favourites that we’ve been spotting lately.

Butterfly Layers

While layers A-la Rachel Green were more textured, butterfly layers are long, swooping layers the frame the face and create a soft, feathery look. Another great example of boho-chic hair that’s making a comeback and is the perfect, no-fuss hairstyle for the Okanagan Summers.

Half Up Half Down

Exactly as it sounds, the half up half down hairstyle can be dressed up for a night out or styled more casually for an everyday look. To soften the look and frame the face a la Y2K, you can leave a few strands of hair loose around the face. In the 90s, these strands were typically curled or styled with a hot iron for added texture. For an added bonus, pin some of your hair back with butterfly clips!

Braids

Face-framing, around the crown of the head, or double french braids - braids were a popular style in the 90s and we love that they’re still around today! This boho-chic trend truly never gets old, and couple cute braids with loose waves say “Okanagan Lifestyle” loud and clear, if you ask us!

Va-Va-Volume

Big hair everywhere - and we’re here for it. Back in the early 2000s, one of the most popular techniques for adding volume to the hair was teasing or backcombing to create tiny knots that add height and fullness. We don’t love this method, and instead achieve volume in our blowouts by how we blow dry: blowdrying in the opposite direction lifts the roots and creates volume - without damaging  your hair.

Barettes and Buns

Yes, at the same time! We love this look. In the Y2K years, we saw a lot of high, sleek buns with barettes, but the modern version features a low messy bun instead which we just adore. Add a few clips to the side, and you’re bring Y2K Back, baby.
